Over the holidays ...

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all my students and their families a wonderful Winter break!  Please remember that over the winter break I am asking all of you to practise counting from 30-70.  Here is a video that will help you to pronounce the numbers correctly:

The first week back I will be testing you on your counting skills in French.

Have a wonderful break and I will see you all in the new year!

Blog Questions for Points

Starting today, I will be posting questions on this website a few times a week.  If you read the question you have to come into class the next day and tell me the answer in French.  If you get the right answer you will earn yourself a point.  This is just another way of verifying that you are visiting the website at least 3 times a week to practise the vocabulary and look at the links.

Question:  Comment t'appelles-tu?

Conjugating -ER verbs

We have been learning how to write using verbs that end in -ER.  For example, manger, sauter, jouer, nager, patiner, habiter are all -ER verbs that we should be able to conjugate.  In order to conjugate a verb, students should remember the song that I taught them. The song is:

e
es
e
e
e
ons
ez
ent
ent

These are the endings that they need to conjugate with the pronouns: je,tu,il,elle,on,nous, vous, ils, elles

Remember that before you can conjugate an -ER verb you have to drop the ER ending and then add the new endings to the root word.

Online Dictionary

I am aware that not everyone has a French dictionary at home.  There is a great online English-French and French-English dictionary that even I use from time to time.  The students have seen me using it in class.  The link is:   http://www.wordreference.com/enfr
As with any dictionary, the key is finding the word that  you need in the correct form.
Have fun!

A Riddle

This week students have been hard at work on their "Tache Finale" for the "Les Animaux" unit.  For their final task they will be creating a riddle for the animal of their choice.  They are all very engaged and are truly enjoying working on this project.  Great work everyone!  Next week we will be starting a new unit! I can't wait!

Etude des Mots

The Grade 5 students started a new program today.  It is a word study that they will have to complete at home over the week and hand in on Friday.  Every Monday they will receive a new list of words to study and will be asked to complete certain activities at home with those words.  They have to hand in their word study notebook every Friday.  The students are very excited to be learning how to read, spell and write with these new words!

Test de Grammaire - Les Animaux

Next week we are going to be very busy in the French classroom.  On Monday, the Grade 5 students have their French Grammar test. They will have to demonstrate their ability to work with the verbs avoir and etre.  Also, they will be starting to work on their Tache Final (Final Task) for the Animaux unit.  They will be making a riddle for their classmates to solve.  I hope you all have a great long weekend and study hard for your upcoming test!

French - English Online dictionary!

Bonjour!
This weekend students will be bringing home a vocabulary list to complete.  They have been working on it in class the past 3 days and have been asked to finish it at home.  This is a great online dictionary for them to use for this assignment and any other homework they may have.

Remember to change the dictionary to French - English.

Students should also be practising their numbers from 1-69 in French.

Have a wonderful Action de Grace and spend time with your loved ones!

This week....

Welcome back! We have had a very busy week getting to know each other.  To get started this week, the Grade 5 students have been showing me what they remember from last year.  They spent time writing down some of the French words they remembered and tomorrow they will try to draw a picture based on a description written in French.  I can't wait to see how they do!  We are doing these activities so that I can see exactly what they know and what they need to review before we move on to our new literacy program.
We have also been practicing "May I" questions that are frequently used in the classroom.  The questions we reviewed are:
Est-ce que je peux aller aux toillettes? May I go to the washroom?
Est-ce que je peux tailler mon crayon? May I sharpen my pencil?
Est-ce que je peux boire de l'eau? May I get a drink of water?
Est-ce que je peux aller chercher mon ... (crayon, livre, cahier)?  May I get my ... (pencil, book, notebook)?

Students are encouraged to say these questions in French only while in the classroom.  Please practice these words at home.
